The Town of Whitby

The Town of Whitby has achieved what many communities strive for, but few have attained: the charm and feel of a small town, situated amidst acres of parks, waterfront trails and conservation areas, but with all the amenities of a big city.

You don’t have to go far in Whitby to discover its beauty, whether you head south towards the Whitby Marina or north to Cullen Park and the quaint village of Brooklin.

Whitby is ideal for sports and nature enthusiasts, and cultural afficionados alike. The Iroquois Park Sports Centre, the Station Gallery, the Whitby Marina, Whitby Yacht Club, Heydenshore Beach and Camp X are all located in the South end of Whitby, which is also home to Whitby’s lakeside communities, Whitby Shores and the Port of Whitby Village.

Further north are the Whitby Civic Recreation Complex, the McKinney Arena, and the Luther Vipond Memorial Arena in Brooklin.  And central to the town is Whitby's stunning new 54,000 sq. foot, 20 million dollar world-class Central library and Civic Square. (www.whitbylibrary.on.ca)

Throughout Whitby you’ll find neighbourhoods comprised of homes small and large, in areas close to parks, schools and shopping.  Although many of Whitby’s neighbourhoods are predominately detached single family units, there are also numerous areas with townhouses and semi-detached homes. And, while much of Whitby’s historic grace and charm can be seen in downtown Whitby and in Brooklin, you can also see evidence of architectural charm in the many new homes being built in the town as developers seek to capture the sight and feel of the area through design. So it’s not surprising to see many Cape Cod-inspired homes with wrap-around verandas, large picture windows situated on wide lots. And in most every neighbourhood you are sure to find nearby parks, schools and shops.

The Town of Whitby celebrated its sesqui-centennial in 2005, with events ranging from a recreation of the incorporation of the town in 1855, to parades, carnivals, and even a recreation of the Queen's Plate horserace of the late 1800's.  Please visit the Whitby website to learn more about our wonderful community:  www.whitby.ca
